Understanding The Levels of Grief
A brief reflection on the levels of grief, showing how emotions don’t follow a set order and how God meets us in every stage of loss.

Grief doesn’t move in a straight line. People often describe grief in levels or stages…but in my own experience, it felt more like layers.
Many people search for the five stages; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance; hoping to understand where they are and when it will ease. But grief rarely follows a clear order.
In my own experience, I’ve felt these levels overlap. Some days I’ve felt acceptance, only to find myself back in disbelief the next moment. Other days, grief showed up quietly, without a name, just a heaviness I couldn’t explain.
What I’ve learned is this: grief is not something we complete. It’s something we move through, slowly and honestly.
Scripture reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). That means we don’t have to figure out where we are before God meets us there.
You don’t have to label every feeling.
You don’t have to get it “right.”
If your grief feels confusing or layered, that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
It means you’re human.
And wherever you are today, God is already there; with you, steady and near.

This is for the person who is grieving quietly, carrying trauma, or healing from losses that were never fully spoken. I remember the moment when my own world collapsed; losing loved ones back-to-back, losing the home I shared memories in with my father, losing stability, and losing pieces of myself I didn’t know how to recover. What I didn’t know then was that writing, music, faith, and therapy would become the pathway God used to rebuild me from the inside out. That’s why I created The Quiet Cry Project; a safe place for weary hearts to breathe, feel, and be restored. Your next step is simply to enter this space and receive the comfort God has for you. - Sheila
